Professional Summary

Dr. Barney Long is Senior Director of Conservation Strategies at Re:wild overseeing the global thematic programs Endangered Species Recovery, Protected Area Management, Wildlife Crime Prevention, Restoration and Rewilding, and Exploration.

Barney works on the conservation of highly endangered species and the site management and thematic approaches required to achieve their recovery. He has worked extensively in the field on a variety of species, and now supports multiple species conservation efforts including rhinos, primates, amphibians, freshwater fish, sharks, small mammals, and tortoises and freshwater turtles. Two specific areas of interest are how to incentivize and catalyze the recovery of species and the one-plan-approach to species conservation. He has co-chaired the development of the Green Status of Species since its inception.

Barney started his career in Southeast Asia conducting baseline biodiversity inventory surveys and searching for presumed extinct primates and using community-based and protected area approaches to conserve species. Prior to joining Re:wild, Barney led the Species Program at WWF-US. Barney is a strong believer in the power of partnerships for conservation and works extensively with the IUCN Species Survival Commission, SMART, Reverse the Red, Red List, and Extinct in the Wild partnerships.
